Satellite frontman Steven McMorran created the video for their single “Say The Words” almost entirely on his iPhone and almost 1.5 million people have already watched it. On his Tumblr page, he wrote about the story behind it:
Broadly stated, Say The Words is based around the phrases, “get out of your head” and “he can be his own worst enemy”. Further, I believe, thoughts only have real meaning after they are put into words, and admitting what you believe about yourself is the first step to finding out if it’s true. I say that with certainty.
Besides this being a montage of my memories, I wanted every shot to have a meaning tied to the lyrics. So, remember that all of it was done to explain what Say The Words means from my perspective. I’d love you to return the favor if any of you feel like explaining what it means to you. (FACT: Except for the NASA footage and the band shots, this was shot on my iphone. In some ways, this was a lesson in communicating with what I had available to me.)
There are shots of my wife resting in the sun simply trying to hold on, my brother josh trying to hold up under his exhaustion with me, and my son, Aiden, being an innocent reminder of who needs me most. There are shots of Mitch helping me speak, Jamie helping me move forward, and an ocean of possible futures. Each shot tells a piece of the story, and each image is a metaphor. The broken jump edits imply how hard it is to find the words smoothly, and how that’s ok. The floating implies that we can be more than the sum of our parts. The “talking heads” are something like “body, soul, and spirit”, and I’ll leave the rest to you.
