Alternative Press recently sat down with Keith Goodwin and Daniel Schwartz of Good Old War to discuss the story behind each track on their new self-titled sophomore album. Of the first single, “My Own Sinking Ship,” they said:
Schwartz: I love someone who all too often ends up on the losing end. Maybe they’re too giving. Maybe they know how to take care of everyone but themselves. Either way, I wanted them to know that no matter how far they sink, I’m there for them. Musically, this is a pretty standard layout for a pop song. I love basic songs that can somehow take you somewhere you aren’t expecting. I’ve always found it fairly easy to write songs that go way out and don’t repeat much, but the biggest challenge is writing a simple verse/chorus/verse type song and somehow keeping it interesting. This song only has two parts if you pay close attention. I’m so happy with how it turned out–especially since I actually did get rid of a few parts that were originally there. Who knows? Maybe they’ll turn up somewhere later.
